Gang, if you can go to this Special Presentation, PLEASE DO! It is shocking what is currently going on in Appalachia, and most of the people in that area are too poor to fight to protect their once healthy mountains being destroyed & losing everything from their food & water supply to just plain fresh air. It is a travesty against justice what is going on there, and some months ago I got a chance to speak over the phone to one of the Sierra Club Lawyers desperately fighting a hard battle against this environmental injustice.

Special Speaker for the evening Larry Gibson is visiting NJ from Appalachia where his family has lived since the 1700s:

Try to imagine what hell looks like,

says Larry Gibson in describing the devastation.

A SPECIAL PROGRAM WITH A SPECIAL GUEST!

Mountaintop Removal: The Assault on Appalachia's Land and People? - Presentation with photo exhibit

Larry Gibson, Keeper of the Mountains, West Virginia, and photographer Mark Schmerling will discuss the devastating impacts of blowing up mountains for coal on the environment, communities and culture of Appalachia. They will also address why this has this been allowed to happen and what can be done to stop it.

The coal mining practice of mountaintop removal, which involves clear-cutting native forests and blasting the tops off mountains, has destroyed over 800 square miles of mountains, dumped millions of tons of waste rock and sludge into valleys, and permanently buried 1,200 miles of streams in West Virginia. It has polluted the air and water, caused severe flooding, endangered wildlife, and wiped out entire communities. ?Try to imagine what hell looks like,? says Larry Gibson in describing the devastation. ?Visit me at Kayford and I'll show you hell's gate.?

Larry Gibson is fighting to stop the destruction of Kayford Mountain (where his family has lived since the late 1700s) and the surrounding areas. The nonprofit Keeper of the Mountains was created to fund Larry's efforts to raise the public's awareness of the ongoing devastation and foster an appreciation of mountain values. He was featured in the CNN Heroes report ?Larry Gibson: Defending the Planet? and also in the film ?Kilowatt Ours.? For more information, visit www.mountainkeeper.org/

Mark Schmerling, a professional photographer, has been documenting the effects of mountaintop removal since 2005 through images that capture the true costs to Appalachia's land and culture. His photographs are featured in "Bringing Down the Mountains" by Dr. Shirley Stewart Burns (West Virginia University Press 2007) and have also been displayed by the Sierra Club and the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition. Mark is working with the Sierra Club Clean Water Campaign that supports legislation to help end mountaintop removal.

Vote YES on # 3 for Open Space in New Jersey! Important!

* * *

It's that time of the year again! The leaves are falling and Election Day is right around corner, this Tuesday, November 6th.

This year, your vote on statewide public question #3 will decide the future of New Jersey's preservation efforts. Vote yes on #3 to preserve New Jersey's parks, natural areas, clean water, wildlife habitat, farmland and historic treasures and encourage your friends and family to do the same.

On November 6th, New Jersey voters will be asked to approve the Green Acres, Farmland, Blue Acres and Historic Preservation Bond Act of 2007. By authorizing the state to issue $200 million in bonds, the Act would provide much-needed funds to keep the state's open space, farmland and historic preservation programs afloat for one more year and to support the Blue Acres program to purchase flood prone properties from willing sellers.

The Garden State Preservation Trust has funded New Jersey's preservation programs since 1998 when voters approved a ballot question by a 2 to 1 margin dedicating nearly 10 years of funds for the Trust. However, the Trust is now running out of money and passage of this question is necessary to keep the state's preservation and park improvement efforts going until a long-term funding source is secured.

Even with current preservation efforts, New Jersey loses more than 40 acres of open space to development everyday. At this rate, our state is projected reach full build out within 30 years. Your yes vote on #3 is needed to ensure that New Jersey can continue to preserve open space, farmland and historic treasures across the state before it is too late.

This November 6th, invest in the future of New Jersey by voting yes on this ballot question and encouraging friends and family to do the same. To find your polling place, visit https://voter.njsvrs.com/PublicAccess/jsp/PollPlace/PollPlaceSearch.jsp.

For more information, please visit www.NJKeepItGreen.org or read the frequently asked questions and answers below.

Thank you! Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Learn More about Question #3 Below

How will New Jersey residents benefit from the passage of the bond act?

Protecting our state's natural areas, farmlands, parks, and historic sites enhances the beauty and quality of life for all New Jersey residents. Even with current preservation efforts, New Jersey loses more than 40 acres of open space to development everyday. At this rate, our state is projected to reach full development within 30 years. We must preserve these lands before it is too late in order to protect our clean drinking water supplies, provide parks for our children, reduce the impact of floods and storms, and keep our communities attractive and safe. Parks and natural areas provide places for hiking, jogging and other physical activity, which increases fitness and reduces obesity. These areas also reduce air and water pollution impacts on public health and associated costs for health care and drinking water treatment. Finally, urban parks have been linked to community revitalization through job creation and neighborhood crime reduction.

How will the money from the bond act be used?

Passage of public question #3 will provide funds to continue the existing Green Acres, Farmland Preservation and New Jersey Historic Trust programs. These valuable state programs preserve open space, working farms and historic sites in communities across the state, protect our drinking water and provide parks and recreational opportunities for New Jersey residents. The bond act will also provide funds for the Blue Acres program to purchase flood-prone lands from willing sellers for open space preservation purposes. Eligible lands are either prone to or have already incurred flood or storm damage and are located in the Delaware, Passaic and Raritan river basin floodways.

Will the passage of public question #3 increase my taxes?

Passage of question #3 will not impose any new taxes, and the funds made available can be paid for with existing revenue. The act allows the State Treasurer to issue bonds, which must be paid back within the next 30 years. Bonding, a common method for funding land acquisition and capital improvements, is the most logical and successful way to fund preservation because it takes advantage of current market values by purchasing land now instead of waiting until it is too expensive or already lost to development. New Jersey voters have approved 11 bond measures since 1961 dedicating funds for preservation efforts.

A yes vote will also help stabilize property taxes. The loss of open space and farmland to development results in increased property taxes as municipalities fund new schools, roads and public infrastructure to support this development.

When:
Saturday, November 3, 2007, 11:00 AM 2007
Where:
Hacklebarney Farm
104 State Park Rd
, NJ 07930

Description:
This is going to be all day kinda deal, but leisurely. At first we'll meet at Hacklebarney Farm/Cider Mill/Bakery/ county store. The have fresh pressed apple cider, and also a bakery specializing in apple goods such as donuts and pies. It's very near the entrance to the park and it's cool to watch the cider press in action. The lady I spoke with said on the weekends it's real busy so I'd like to start out early before the donuts are gone. If you call them the bakery takes requests. From there we'll head over to the park. It's smaller, I think the trails aren't more than 2.5 miles, but there are a couple of points of interest within the park such as waterfalls and an overlook. Mountain Bikes are not allowed in this park. It should be a great day. But after the hike, we'll continue on to the Long Valley Pub and Brewery for some really fresh beer and lunch/dinner. All three destinations are within 5 minutes of one another, 10 from downtown Chester.

Directions are as follows: find Route 206 and take it to downtown Chester. Then look for signs to Hacklebarney and/or county road 513 west. Follow the signs to the park. Turn left onto State Park Road and follow that for about 3 miles to the farm.

I can specify a start time for the day. After we get going it'll be up to the group to decide when we go where. But everything is very close by so it should be easy to catch up with us. I'll send out my cell a couple of days before to those who RSVP. Now, please RSVP ASAP because I have to make reservations at the restaurant. RSVP NO LATER THAN FRIDAY OCTOBER 19. If you have questions send me an email I check it everyday.
