This Sunday, we are having a launch event for our new Eco-Map of the Upper East Side. The map will be a handy reference for local residents to find local green business like restaurants, place to buy local / organic food, recycle clothing, buy a bike, etc.

We'll be hosting the event at the 92nd Street greenmarket in front of the Stanley Isaacs Center. We will have Council Member Dan Garodnick attending around 11:30am who provided a grant from the City of New York to print the maps.

Dear Upper Green Siders

Last week, biking advocates turned out and strongly advocated for protected bike lanes at the Community Board Transportation Committee. As a result, the committee unanimously passed a resolution in favor of protected bike lanes because of their safety benefits.

The full community board will be considering this resolution at its next meeting on Oct 21st. Please come out to support this in person (best) or write an email to the Community Board at info@cb8m.com

Here's the draft text of the resolution:

WHEREAS, Manhattan Community Board 8 is concerned about the safety of all people who use our streets and sidewalks,

WHEREAS, protected bike lanes have brought measurable safety improvements to other neighborhoods in Manhattan,

WHEREAS, many members of the Upper East Side public, business community, and elected officials have all expressed support for protected bike lanes in petitions, surveys, letters, and public testimony,

WHEREAS, Manhattan Community Board 8 wishes to encourage safe, responsible cycling in, to, and from this district,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that CB8 supports the DOT's initiative to create protected bike lanes and requests that DOT prepare a study for a neighborhood bicycle network that includes Class 1 protected bike lanes (including information on projected impacts on pedestrian safety, bike safety, parking, truck traffic, and neighborhood business) that would be subject to review and comment by Community Board 8.

The Community Board will be discussing biking issues at an upcoming Transportation Committee meeting.

First the Board will be considering a Department of Transportation initiative to expand the number of City Bike Racks on Madison Avenue. This would provide more convenient and aesthetic pleasing bike racks on a major commercial corridor.

Then, the board is going to discuss various ideas that were discussed at a biking forum this past week to improve safety of biking. Many biking advocates were in attendance at the forum this past week and advocated for biking improvements such as protected bike lanes on First and Second Avenues, finishing the East River Greenway and additional East-West bike lanes.

We need as many biking advocates to come out and speak up for better, safer and more convenient biking infrastructure on the East Side to allow more people to participate in a more sustainable and healthier mode of transportation. The good news to share with the Board is that in other parts of Manhattan, like Ninth Avenue, new protected bike lanes have reduced traffic accidents, injuries and deaths for automobiles, pedestrians and cyclists.

The is the way that progress happens. Be part of it.

NYC needs more mass transit alternatives to reduce overcrowding on existing mass transit routes, reducing polluting automobile congestion and provide people with faster and easier commuting alternatives.

One of the underutilized transportation options is NYC's waterways, particularly on the East River. The East River used to have a bustling network of ferries that provided convenient transportation to people that live near the water but not necessarily a mass transit connection. Ferries have the potential to build a more integrated and widespread mass transit network which promotes a more sustainable transportation system overall. Ferries are particularly convenient for pedestrians and cyclists.

Please come to this event and voice your support for a strong and sustainable ferry system in NYC, especially along the East River.

Monday, October 5th
5:30 pm to 7:30 pm
Hunter School of Social Work Auditorium
129 East 79th Street
Between Lexington and Park Avenues
This event is sponsored by Speaker Christine Quinn and Council Members Dan Garodnick and Jessica Lappin.
In May of 2008, the New York City Council and Mayor Bloomberg presented a three-phased plan to better utilize New York City's waterways. The New York City Economic Development Corporation and the New York City Department of Transportation have begun a six-month Comprehensive Citywide Ferry Study that aims to identify areas in each borough that are suitable for new ferry landing sites and to further expand ferry service around New York City. This study includes one forum in each borough to better understand the needs of that community.
Your input on existing and proposed landing sites is vital to creating the best possible ferry service for all New Yorkers!
Please share this email with your lists and anyone who may be interested.
If you want to join us in this important discussion, please RSVP to Speakerquinn@council.nyc.gov or call 212-788-9221.
