SUMMARY:Medicinal Plant Walk with Potomac Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:Washington DC Environment Meetup Group\n\nRanda Steblez is impr
essed with the rich utilitarian history and folklore of common trees\, weed
s and wildflowers often overlooked by hikers as merely a blur of textured g
reenery. One may have a casual encounter along the Potomac with an Ash tree
\, but become better acquainted by discovering that the juice of its leaves
was use by Native Americans as a snake bite remedy. Some other examples o
f close to home fame are the dandelion and the mullein plant\, common and p
revalent\, but which figured so importantly in medieval pharmacology\, that
they were depicted in many well known tapestries. \n\nThese are just a co
uple of sketches\, but there are many more "celebrities" along the path\, s
ome with fairly amazing histories. Her interpretive guidebook "Shoreline Pl
ants of Lake Winnipesaukee" has been widely distributed in the New Hampshir
e Lake Region and she is currently working on a similar journal about the P
otomac Canal.\nThe River Center is open Saturdays and Sundays from May 3 th
rough October 18 from 10 am ‘til 2 pm for tours of the lockhouse and intera
ctive exhibits. Inside the River Center\, the Conservancy installed a new e
xhibit\, “Backyard to the Bay\,” that connects what happens on the land and
the health of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Visitors are guide
d by the Potomac Conservancy’s volunteer docents who lead tours\, answer qu
estions and discuss the historical and cultural significance of the C&O Can
al and the Potomac River to the regional economy and the local quality of l
ife. \n\nFor additional information about the River Center at Lockhouse 8\
, contact Bridget Chapin (chapin@potomac.org) or visit http://www.potomac.o
 rg/site/discover-rclh8/.\n\n\nAbout Potomac Conservancy \nSince 1993\, the
