Glenn Mack

For many years, a broad coalition of neighborhood activists, joggers, parents, cyclists and many others have fought to make Central Park's loop car-free. Transportation Alternatives helped organize a petition drive that collected over 100,000 signatures to ask the city to make the park car-free for a trial 3 month period in the Summer.

Through the years, the Department of Transportation and the City have gradually scaled back the number of car-free hours in the park. Currently cars are allowed to use the loop from 7-10am on the West Side, but recently the City announced that it will be extending car-free hours in the morning to 8am, meaning that park users will have more time in the morning to enjoy the peace, quite and safety of having a car-free park.

Please come and celebrate this extension with Upper Green Side members and other community members as we celebrate this minor victory and educate the public about how we are gradually making the city more livable and environmentally friendly.
